Continuing Basic Trainees & Advanced Trainees

 

In order to successfully complete Basic Paediatric Training (BPT), a trainee must:

When a trainee completes the requisite 36 months of training time but does not undertake (or does not successfully complete) one or both of the RACP Exams, they are deemed a Continuing Basic Trainee (CBT):  

  • CBTs are no longer eligible to preference a roster through the annual BPT progression progress;

  • As a CBT, trainees can obtain a paediatric position in a number of ways:

  • CBTs are welcome to undertake exam preparation activities hosted by RCH and MCH. To do this, the CBT must be employed by RCH, MCH or another Victorian Health Service (in order to be appropriately credentialed). Further details can be found on the VBPTC FRACP Exams page;

  • From an RACP point of view, CBTs can enrol in the RACP as one of the following two:

    1. 1. Remain a basic trainee 

      • Trainees remain allocated to a DPE and Educational Supervisor, to ensure they continue to have support as a basic trainee; and

      • Trainees must continue doing assessments such as Learning Needs Analyses and Mini-CEXs (in a Prep trainee) or Observation Captures (in the New Curriculum)

    2. 2. Become an interrupted trainee

      • Trainees remain allocated to a DPE and Educational Supervisor, to ensure they continue to have support as a basic trainee; and

      • Trainees do not have to complete the RACP assessments (but may still need to complete Continuing Professional Development requirements)

  • When a CBT passes the RACP Exams (DWE and DCE), they can then enrol as an Advanced Trainee with the RACP.

When a trainee completes the requisite 36 months of training time AND successfully completes the RACP Exams (DWE and DCE), they are eligible to enrol with the RACP as an Advanced Trainee (AT):  

  • ATs are not eligible to preference a roster through the annual BPT progression progress;

  • As an AT, trainees can obtain an accredited AT paediatric position in a number of ways:

    1. 1. Via the centralised VPAT process

    2. 2. Directly via health services 

  • Trainees can enrol with the RACP to commence Advanced Training in February or August of each clinical year

  • There is no ERS pathway for ATs, but most rural and regional health services offer positions accredited for AT.
